Delicacies of Lucca

LE DELICATEZZA DI ISOLA ROBERTO

The Italian food shop is widely imitated. You can find things that look vaguely like this in many parts of the world. But this is the genuine article. That's Roberto Isola himself in a blur of action on this Friday before New Year's Eve when everybody's getting in the mood to ring in the new in the easiest most delicious way possible. That giant cheese is Italian, aged in berries from the wood.

He's a cheese lover and his cheese comes from everywhere—he even sells Stilton and English Cheddar; here in Lucca we're all used to nothing but the best, quality and variety.

This interesting-looking Dutch woman, carrying a silver-handled stick, seemed to know the lay of the land.

Grains and beans are displayed in bulk along with locally ground flours.

In his kitchen Roberto, who gets up a four in the morning, prepares the Lucchese "Tordelli," and such festive touches for New Year's Eve as insalata Russa.

I don't eat meat, but I can admire a well packaged product.

Canditi and the great local sweet bread with anis called buccellato.

There's everything you need for an intimate, celebratory evening at home, but if you don't see it out it's there in back somewhere beside the caviar.

It's said that during the war, when all of Europe was starving, Lucca was eating as if nothing had happened. It wasn't necessarily about being able to afford to eat, it was about will and creativity.

I love the spirit of 'will and creativity'... and, seeing these beautiful photographs is such a treat! You can imagine the bouquet of aromas in Mr. Isola's wonderful food shop. Wishing you a Happy New Year!

Interesting to learn you are a vegetarian!Everything looks delicious. Planning on a quiet dinner at home myself to bring in the New Year and I see quite a few items here to add to my menu!

Those pictures produce a literal, physical ache in me, I can't explain it. I live in a pretty cosmopolitan city, and travel to NYC a lot, but I just want to live in Italy so badly! I was in Lucca briefly this past October, but I was just in the walled part, I don't know where this store is.

PS: I don't recall you being vegetarian but am delighted to hear the good news.

I don't think I have ever seen anything in Wales to compete with this plethora of goodies. Taleggio, my favourite, is the closest we come in the Tesco Finest range.
Enjoy!

This is not fair...really. This is supposed to be a blog about gardens and houses and beautiful things, except food! OMG Paul, I don't know if it's the camera or what but landing on your blog lately has become too much to bear. So I make a deal with you, you have to market what you show...only fair.

Best wishes and lots of good things to you and Giles in the new year.

Much love,

Julieta

It's not quite happening upon a midnight hour here in exotic South East Asia. A few hours to go, and time to enjoy an unusually (for the occasion) diner a deux, but one which nonetheless I am much looking forward. Somehow this year I couldn't face large crowds...initially at least, and have turned down two invitations. Later I may feel the need to "revel" and go out into the big bad city, but I am loving the idea of leaving that to fate and spontaneity. May Twenty Twelve bring you both the best of your hearts' desires.

I love posts like this. The photos are filled with such information. I enjoy seeing the variations from place to place. Sadly Chicago just doesn't have a good market like this, well, there is one and only one. I miss the availability of things as I could find in NYC. This place is indeed a treasure.

A beautiful garden is the same.

Will & creativity.

Lack of resources or time is zero excuse.
